The following classes are offered by to promote enthusiasm, safety, and interest in paddling.

Beginning Canoeing:

Learn effective paddling techniques and on-the-water safety. The classroom session introduces equipment and canoe safety. Weekend sessions cover basic techniques, strokes, and rescues, preparing students to paddle on lakes, bayous, or flatwater. This class also prepares students for advanced courses. Students must demonstrate their ability to be comfortable in water.
Cost: $80 + $39 canoe rental, food.
NOTE: No refunds, credits, or transfers are given after 12 noon on the Monday prior to the class.

Introduction to Canoe Camping

Participate, make new friends, and experience the beauty of Texas rivers. This course will introduce you to a safe way to experience the wonder of the great outdoors during a weekend of learning and fun. The pre-trip meeting covers what to bring, how to pack, river reading, canoe strokes, canoe camping, dutch oven cooking, logistics, and more.
Cost: $150 + $20 canoe rental
NOTE: Food and transportation will be kept to a shared minimal expense.

Whitewater Experience Guide Training and
Wilderness Outdoor Adventures

Think there's wilderness in and around Houston and across the state? Of course there is. From the wilds of Buffalo Bayou to the majestic Hill Country and Big Bend National Park, opportunities for exploration abound. What does it take to become a guide for ?

In Section A, Becoming a Whitewater Experience Guide, learn how to teach the wonders of nature using the river as a classroom. Your participation might range from leading local trips to exploring Big Bend National Park.

In Section B, Easy Canoeing Escapes from Houston, see a slide-based lecture showing the many inexpensive, unique, and convenient places to canoe in and around Harris County.

In Section C, Checklist for Leadership of River Trips, learn how to pack, what to bring, and how to work effectively with your companions.

In Section D, What Can Go Wrong on a River Trip, provides over 20 years of insights. Anyone who runs rivers should attend. Learn from the experts and be prepared for the unexpected.

In Section E is a Preview of River Adventures. See slides of Santa Elena and Boquillas Canyons and the Chihuahuan Desert all in Texas' first national park, Big Bend. WE (in conjunction with LLU) leads trips here on most 3-day holiday weekends. Refreshments will be served.
